League Of Chief Imams Urge Nigerians Avoid Middle East Crisis

The League of Chief Imams has warned Nigerians, especially Lagos residents, to avoid protests, unrest, or any action that could disturb peace in the country. They stressed that citizens should not meddle in the ongoing conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States, as it does not directly involve Nigeria.

Speaking at the 2026 Ramadan Tafsir/Iftar programme held at Lagos House, Ikeja, the Chief Imams highlighted the recent protests by members of the South-West chapter of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria. These demonstrations were in response to the reported killing of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, during US-Israeli strikes on Iran.

Sheikh Abdulrahman Ahmad, National Missioner and Chief Imam of the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, called for calm and restraint. He urged that the holy months of Ramadan and Lent should focus on prayer and reflection for peace, rather than protests or discontent over global events.

He further explained that global crises, like the conflict in the Middle East, affect Nigeria indirectly. Citizens should avoid being drawn into propaganda or actions that could escalate tension locally. Sheikh Ahmad also cautioned that unrest could worsen local challenges, including rising fuel prices and economic stress.

Recalling the aftermath of the 2020 EndSARS protests, the Chief Imam emphasized that Lagos and Nigeria are still recovering from previous disruptions. He warned that even well-intentioned demonstrations could lead to destruction and urged Nigerians to be part of the solution, not the problem.

Finally, the League of Chief Imams encouraged unity, spiritual reflection, and responsible citizenship. They asked all clerics to preach peace and avoid disaffection, ensuring that Ramadan brings calm and stability across Nigeria. The programme was attended by Islamic clerics, faithful Muslims, government officials, and journalists, reinforcing the importance of peace and communal harmony.
