10 Common Ramadan Mistakes Muslims Should Avoid This Year

Awwal

Ramadan is one of the most blessed months in Islam. It is a time when Muslims fast, pray more, give charity, and strengthen their relationship with Allah. The purpose of fasting is not only to stop eating and drinking, but to develop taqwa (God-consciousness).

Allah says:

"O you who believe! Fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you so that you may attain piety."
(Qur'an 2:183)

Despite the importance of Ramadan, many Muslims fall into common mistakes that reduce the reward of their fasting. Below are ten mistakes every Muslim should try to avoid.

1. Thinking Fasting Is Only About Food and Drink

Many people believe fasting only means staying away from food and drink. However, fasting also requires controlling one's tongue, eyes, and behavior.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Whoever does not abandon false speech and acting upon it, Allah has no need of him leaving his food and drink."

Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1903)

Therefore, Muslims should avoid lying, backbiting, gossiping, and insulting others during Ramadan.

2. Sleeping Most of the Day

Some people spend most of the day sleeping just to avoid hunger. This causes them to miss prayers, Qur'an recitation, and other acts of worship.

Allah says:

"Remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with complete devotion."
(Qur'an 73:8)

Ramadan is a time for increased worship, not laziness.

3. Skipping the Suhoor (Pre-Dawn Meal)

Some Muslims skip the pre-dawn meal thinking it is not necessary. But Suhoor carries great blessings.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Take the pre-dawn meal, for indeed there is blessing in Suhoor."

Even a small amount of food or water before Fajr brings barakah.

4. Delaying Iftar After Sunset

Some people delay breaking the fast unnecessarily. The Sunnah is to break the fast immediately after sunset.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"People will remain upon goodness as long as they hasten to break the fast."

Following the Sunnah brings reward and blessings.

5. Overeating During Iftar

Ramadan should teach moderation, but many people overeat at Iftar, which leads to laziness and difficulty in praying Taraweeh.

Allah says:

"Eat and drink but do not be excessive. Indeed, Allah does not like those who commit excess."

(Qur'an 7:31)

Moderation helps maintain spiritual focus.

6. Neglecting the Qur'an

Ramadan is known as the Month of the Qur'an.

Allah says:

"The month of Ramadan in which the Qur'an was revealed as guidance for mankind."

(Qur'an 2:185)

Muslims should dedicate time every day to reading and reflecting on the Qur'an.

7. Abandoning Taraweeh Prayers

Many Muslims miss Taraweeh because of tiredness or distractions. However, Taraweeh carries great reward.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Whoever stands (in prayer) during Ramadan with faith and seeking reward will have his previous sins forgiven
."

Even praying a few rak'ahs regularly is better than missing it entirely.

8. Wasting Time on Social Media and Entertainment

Some Muslims spend many hours watching movies, playing games, or scrolling social media. This wastes the valuable time of Ramadan.

Instead, believers should increase:

Qur'an recitation

Dhikr (remembrance of Allah)

Seeking Islamic knowledge

Making du'a

9. Neglecting Charity and Helping the Poor

Ramadan is a month of generosity and compassion.

Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) reported:

"The Messenger of Allah was the most generous of people, and he was even more generous during Ramadan."

Helping the needy and feeding fasting people brings great reward.

10. Returning to Bad Habits After Ramadan

One major mistake is abandoning good deeds after Ramadan ends.

Allah reminds us:

"Worship your Lord until there comes to you certainty (death)."

(Qur'an 15:99)

Ramadan should train believers to continue good deeds throughout the year.
