Reports say that Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, was killed during one of the first missile strikes carried out by the United States and Israel during a war with Iran. He was 86 years old and was said to have been in poor health before the attack. His death has created a serious leadership crisis in the country.

Before this event, senior Iranian officials had already prepared plans for who would replace him if he died. However, they likely did not expect his death to happen during a war. Iran's state-linked Mehr News Agency reported that a decision about the next Supreme Leader has already been made, but some issues still need to be resolved before the name is officially announced.

A member of Iran's Assembly of Experts, Hojjatoleslam Jafari, said the delay in announcing the next leader is difficult for the country. He explained that people should trust their representatives during this sensitive time and avoid negative thoughts while the leadership transition is being finalized.

Some earlier reports from The New York Times suggested that the leading candidate to replace Khamenei is his second son, Mojtaba Khamenei. However, experts say his appointment could be controversial. Christian Emery of University College London noted that Mojtaba is believed to be very influential in Iran, but he lacks formal government experience.

Another reason for concern is that many political and religious leaders fear that choosing the son of the Supreme Leader could look like a return to hereditary rule. This would go against the main principle of the Iranian Revolution, which aimed to end the monarchy system that existed under the Shah.

Despite these concerns, Mojtaba is believed to have strong ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a powerful military force in Iran. If he becomes the next Supreme Leader, analysts believe the political and economic power of the Revolutionary Guards could remain strong, continuing the system built during Khamenei's leadership.
