Iran has officially named Mojtaba Khamenei as the country's new Supreme Leader following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei. Iranian state media reported that the decision was made by the Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for selecting the country's top religious and political leader.

Reports say that Ali Khamenei died after joint military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel. The attack reportedly targeted Iranian leadership locations and military infrastructure. According to officials, the strikes hit his office inside a secured compound in Tehran on February 28, 2026.

Following his death, Iran declared a 40-day national mourning period. Both Iranian state television and officials from the United States confirmed the news of the strike and the death of the longtime leader. The development has increased tensions across the Middle East and raised fears of a wider regional conflict.

Before becoming Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei was known as a mid-ranking cleric with strong connections to Iran's powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. For years, some members of Iran's political and religious establishment had already viewed him as a possible successor to his father.

Although Iran's political ideology generally rejects hereditary leadership, Mojtaba's close relationships with powerful security institutions and the influence of his father's political network reportedly helped him secure the position. His appointment has already sparked debate among analysts and observers of Iranian politics.

Ali Khamenei had ruled Iran since 1989 and played a major role in shaping the country's foreign policy, particularly its strong opposition to Israel and Western nations. Under his leadership, Iran supported several allied groups across the Middle East and continued to express support for the Palestinian cause.
