Controversial Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, has claimed that the Nigerian government knows the identity and location of all terrorists operating in the country. He made this statement during a television interview while explaining why he sometimes meets with armed groups. According to him, the authorities are aware of who these terrorists are and where they operate.

Gumi said he does not secretly meet the armed groups. Instead, he claims that he informs security agencies before visiting them. He explained that he usually contacts the police, other security officials, and even traditional rulers before such meetings. The cleric said these engagements are meant to encourage dialogue and help reduce violence.

He further explained that he rarely travels alone for such visits. According to him, when he once went to meet a terrorist leader, several people accompanied him, including women. He said the public may not have seen them because cameras did not focus on everyone present during the visit.

Earlier in December 2025, Gumi also suggested that some foreign powers might be supporting terrorist groups operating in Nigeria. In an interview with BBC Hausa, he said the pattern of attacks across the country appears too organised to be purely local. He believes the nature of the weapons used by the attackers suggests the possibility of external support.

The cleric also pointed to areas that were previously improving in security. He mentioned the Abuja–Kaduna Highway, which had once been considered one of the most dangerous roads in Nigeria but later became relatively safer before violence increased again. He also noted that residents in Birnin Gwari had started returning to their farms before fresh attacks forced many to flee again.

Responding to criticism about his meetings with bandits, Gumi said his actions are based on religious responsibility and the search for peace. According to him, many of the perpetrators act out of ignorance and misguidance. He insisted that Islam does not support oppression and said his efforts are aimed at preaching against kidnapping, stealing, and violence in society.
