A group of women in Kano State has started a unique transport service called 'Mata Zalla', designed exclusively for female passengers. This initiative aims to make travel safer and more comfortable for women in the city.

The term Mata Zalla means "exclusively women" in Hausa. The service ensures that only women can ride these tricycles, respecting the local cultural and social norms in the region.

Women are also the drivers in this program. By training women to operate tricycles, the project provides new employment opportunities in a sector traditionally dominated by men.

Male passengers are transported separately by male-operated tricycles. This separation ensures both safety and adherence to Kano's conservative cultural values while allowing women more freedom in commuting.

The service also offers affordable fares to encourage more women to use it. Lower costs aim to make daily travel easier for women from all income levels.

Overall, Mata Zalla promotes economic empowerment and cultural sensitivity. By giving women both a safe ride and a chance to earn, the program strengthens their role in Kano's growing transport industry.
