Zakatul Fitr: Important Charity Every Fasting Muslim Must Give

Ramadan is gradually coming to an end, and today marks the 24th day of this blessed month. As Muslims prepare for the celebration of Eid, it is important to remember one important obligation known as Zakatul Fitr. This special charity is required from every Muslim who observed the fast of Ramadan. It is a way of completing the fasting period with kindness and generosity toward those in need.

Zakatul Fitr is a compulsory charity that must be given before the Eid prayer. It helps to purify the fast of a Muslim from mistakes or shortcomings that may have occurred during the month of Ramadan. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The fast remains suspended between heaven and earth until the Sadaqat al-Fitr is paid." (Reported by Abu Dawood and Ibn Majah). This shows the great importance of giving this charity before Eid.

The purpose of Zakatul Fitr is not only spiritual purification but also to support the poor and needy. Islam encourages Muslims to share their blessings with others so that everyone can experience happiness during Eid. When Muslims give Zakatul Fitr, it ensures that less privileged people also have food and can celebrate the day with dignity and joy.

The Prophet ﷺ instructed that Zakatul Fitr should be given in the form of staple food commonly eaten in the community. Examples include rice, wheat, dates, corn, millet, and other local grains. Each person is required to give one Sā', which is approximately four mudus or about twelve cups of grain. This amount is given on behalf of each member of the household.

Many Islamic scholars advise that the charity should be given as food rather than cash because that was the practice during the time of the Prophet ﷺ. However, if someone gives money to a trusted Islamic organization or representative who will use it to buy food for the needy, it can still fulfill the purpose of the obligation.

Zakatul Fitr must be given before the Eid prayer. If someone delays it until after the prayer, it will only be counted as normal charity and not as Zakatul Fitr. Therefore, Muslims are encouraged to give it early so that the poor can benefit from it on the day of Eid. May Allah accept our fasting, prayers, and acts of charity during this blessed month. Ameen.
