Syria Demands Assad Handover While Implementing Transitional Justice Amnesty Pro

The Syrian government has formally demanded the handover of former president Bashar al-Assad along with other individuals accused of involvement in alleged crimes during his rule. This request comes as the country begins implementing a transitional justice process aimed at addressing past political and legal grievances. Authorities say the move is part of efforts to rebuild national institutions and establish accountability after years of conflict and political instability.

According to Syria's justice minister, Mazhar al‑Wais, the government is committed to pursuing justice while balancing national reconciliation. He emphasized that the demand for the extradition of former officials is essential for the legal process and for restoring trust among Syrian citizens who were affected by past policies and actions under the previous administration.

Al-Wais explained that a recently issued general amnesty decree was introduced due to urgent legal and legislative challenges facing the country. He described the decision as a "pressing necessity" given the complex judicial environment inherited by the new government. According to him, the decree was carefully designed to comply with constitutional requirements and existing legal frameworks.

The amnesty decree was issued earlier in the week by Syrian President Ahmed al‑Sharaa. The order grants a general amnesty for certain crimes and also reduces sentences for others. Government officials say the measure is intended to ease pressure on the judicial system while offering many citizens an opportunity to reintegrate into society.

Authorities confirmed that the implementation of the decree began immediately after it was announced. The justice minister revealed that approximately 1,500 detainees have already been released under the new policy. Officials say the releases were conducted after reviewing individual cases to determine eligibility under the amnesty terms.

Al-Wais also estimated that the total number of Syrians who may benefit from the decree could reach about 500,000 people. This large number reflects the wide range of cases affected by the long years of conflict and emergency laws that led to the detention or prosecution of many individuals across the country.

The Syrian government maintains that the transitional justice process will continue alongside the amnesty program. Officials say both initiatives aim to promote national reconciliation while ensuring that serious crimes are still addressed through proper legal channels. Authorities believe this balanced approach could help the country move toward stability and a more unified future.
