UN Report Accuses Israel Of War Crime Iran Prison

A new report from the United Nations says an Israeli airstrike on a prison in Tehran, Iran may amount to a war crime. The investigation focused on an attack on Evin Prison during an air conflict between Iran and Israel in June 2025. According to the report, the strike hit a civilian facility and caused heavy casualties.

Iranian authorities said more than 70 people were killed when the prison was struck. Evin Prison is known for holding political prisoners and detainees accused of opposing the government. The prison has also reportedly been damaged again in more recent joint air strikes carried out by the United States and Israel, raising new concerns for the safety of prisoners inside.

The investigation was presented to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva by Sara Hossain, the chair of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran. She said the investigators found reasonable evidence suggesting that Israel intentionally targeted a civilian location, which could be considered a war crime under international law.

The report stated that around 80 people were killed in the attack, including one child and eight women. Investigators reached their conclusions after examining satellite images, documents, and testimonies from victims and witnesses. These findings were shared during the council session to highlight possible violations of international humanitarian law.

Israel has withdrawn its participation from the United Nations Human Rights Council and did not immediately respond to requests for comment from media outlets. Meanwhile, investigators warned that continued airstrikes could increase civilian suffering and worsen the political situation inside Iran.

Another UN expert on Iran, Mai Sato, also raised concerns about prisoners, including those arrested during protests earlier in 2026. She said many families cannot contact their detained relatives and that food and medical supplies in prisons are becoming scarce. Iran's ambassador to the UN, Ali Bahreini, called for international condemnation of the US-Israeli attacks, claiming the strikes have killed more than 1,300 people across Iran.
