Yoruba Coalition Warns Against Religion In Politics Division

A coalition of Yoruba groups known as the Alliance for Yoruba Democratic Movements (AYDM) has warned against bringing religious sentiments into politics in Yorubaland. The group said such actions could weaken the unity and peaceful coexistence that the region has enjoyed for many years.

This warning followed comments made by Ishaq Akintola, the leader of the Muslims Rights Concern (MURIC). He reportedly urged Muslims to vote only for Muslim candidates in upcoming governorship elections in states like Osun, Oyo, Lagos, and Ogun.

In response, AYDM described the statement as divisive and not suitable for the political reality of the South-West. The group stressed that Yoruba people are generally open-minded and should not be separated based on religion when making political decisions.

The coalition warned that encouraging religion-based voting could lead to reactions from other religious groups. According to them, this could create unnecessary tension and deepen divisions among people who have lived peacefully together for generations.

AYDM also accused Akintola of trying to create division in Yorubaland and described his comments as irresponsible. The group pointed out that leadership in the South-West has never been based mainly on religion, as past leaders have always received support from people of different faiths.

The coalition concluded by emphasizing that Muslims, Christians, and traditional worshippers in Yorubaland share the same roots and should remain united. They also called for the protection of religious harmony and warned against any actions that could disrupt the peace in the region.
