Iran is preparing to execute a woman and her husband over their involvement in recent protests, marking what is believed to be the first time a female protester will face execution in the country. This action is part of a wider crackdown by the government on individuals linked to demonstrations that took place earlier this year.

Authorities have already executed seven people connected to the protests. Reports say the demonstrations were forcefully suppressed, leading to the deaths of thousands of people and the arrest of many more across the country.

On April 14, a court in Tehran sentenced four individuals to death. They include Bita Hemmati and her husband, Mohammadreza Majidi-Asl, as well as two other men, Behrouz Zamaninejad and Kourosh Zamaninejad, who all lived in the same building in the capital city.

Hemmati is believed to be the first woman sentenced to death for participating in the protests. The group was accused of acting on behalf of the United States and allegedly throwing concrete blocks at security forces from a residential building.

Human rights organizations have raised concerns about the case, saying that forced confessions were broadcast on state television. According to activists, this violates the rights of the accused and raises questions about fairness and transparency in the legal process.

Reports from international rights groups show that executions in Iran have increased significantly. In 2025 alone, over 1,600 people have reportedly been executed, including dozens of women. Many observers believe the rising number of executions is being used to create fear and discourage further protests in the country.
