VP Shettima Flags Off Nigeria 2026 Hajj Operations Airlift

Nigeria has officially started its 2026 Hajj operations with the first group of pilgrims departing for Saudi Arabia. The event was led by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, marking the beginning of this year's pilgrimage journey for thousands of Nigerians.

The first flight carried about 473 pilgrims from Kogi State, setting the pace for a nationwide exercise. In total, more than 50,000 Nigerian pilgrims are expected to travel to Saudi Arabia for the 2026 Hajj. This large-scale movement requires careful planning and coordination to ensure a smooth experience for everyone involved.

Speaking at the event, Vice President Kashim Shettima reminded the pilgrims that they represent Nigeria and should behave responsibly. He encouraged them to show discipline, patience, humility, and integrity throughout their stay in the holy land, stressing the importance of obeying the laws of Saudi Arabia at all times.

He also described the Hajj as a serious responsibility shared between the government and its citizens. According to him, the government has a duty to make sure that every pilgrim completes the journey without unnecessary stress, hardship, or fear. Ensuring comfort and safety remains a top priority for the authorities.

The Vice President further assured Nigerians that the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to protecting citizens both at home and abroad. He emphasized that pilgrims deserve dignity, proper care, and respect throughout the pilgrimage process.

Finally, he called on all officials involved—including Hajj managers, airline operators, medical teams, and security agencies—to work together effectively. He noted that the true success of the operation will depend on how comfortable and well-organized the experience is for the pilgrims, as well as the absence of avoidable difficulties during the journey.
