NAHCON Warns Pilgrims Against Carrying Zamzam Water Home

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has advised Nigerian pilgrims returning from the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage not to pack Zamzam water or other prohibited items in their luggage. The commission explained that carrying such items could cause delays during airport screening and may lead to the confiscation of the luggage contents. The warning comes as thousands of pilgrims begin their journey back to Nigeria after completing Hajj in Saudi Arabia.

NAHCON confirmed that the return airlift operation is progressing successfully. On Thursday, June 4, a FlyNas aircraft transported 426 pilgrims from Kebbi State from Jeddah to Nigeria. This brought the total number of pilgrims returned home to 986 within the first two completed flights since the operation started on June 3.

The first return flight was operated by MaxAir and carried 560 pilgrims from Nasarawa State to Abuja. More flights are expected in the coming days as NAHCON and its partner airlines continue the gradual transportation of Nigerian pilgrims back home after about one month in Saudi Arabia.

To ensure a smooth departure process, NAHCON reminded pilgrims to follow the approved baggage rules. Each pilgrim is allowed two checked bags weighing up to 23 kilograms each and one hand luggage not exceeding 8 kilograms. The commission stressed that carrying multiple hand bags will not be allowed.

According to NAHCON, luggage screening will take place 48 hours before departure. This arrangement is designed to help speed up airport procedures and make it easier for pilgrims to receive their luggage upon arrival in Nigeria. Pilgrims are encouraged to cooperate fully with officials during the screening exercise.

The commission also listed several prohibited items that should not be included in luggage. These include Zamzam water, lighter fluids, lithium batteries, power banks packed in checked bags, aerosols, excessive liquids, and sharp objects in hand luggage. NAHCON praised the airlines participating in the operation and expressed confidence that the return journey will continue smoothly with the cooperation of pilgrims and stakeholders.
