Oyo Muslims Condemn Kidnappers’ Shariah Demand, Reject Terrorism Completely

The Muslim Community of Oyo State has strongly condemned reports that some kidnappers allegedly demanded the implementation of Sharia law alongside a huge ransom for the release of abducted schoolgirls. The community stated that criminals and terrorists do not represent Islam and have no right to speak on behalf of Muslims.

In a statement signed by the Chairman, Alhaji Ishaq Kunle Sanni, and the Secretary-General, Alhaji Murisiku Abidemi Siyanbade, the group described the reported demand as misleading, criminal, and unacceptable. They stressed that Islam should never be used to justify kidnapping, violence, or any other criminal activity.

The community noted that reports about the kidnappers' demands have not yet been officially confirmed by security agencies. However, it emphasized that no criminal group should be allowed to misuse religious teachings to support unlawful actions or create confusion among the public.

According to the Muslim leaders, Islam strictly forbids kidnapping, terrorism, extortion, and harming innocent people. They explained that genuine Sharia law is built on justice, peace, mercy, and the protection of human life, making it completely incompatible with the actions of kidnappers and terrorists.

The statement also highlighted the importance of protecting human life, citing Islamic teachings that condemn the killing or harming of innocent people. Residents of Oyo State were encouraged to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities to security agencies, and reject attempts to link criminal behavior with Islam.

The Muslim Community announced a special prayer session for the safe return of abducted pupils and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area. The prayer, led by the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh Al-Imam Abdul-Ganiyy Abubakar Agbotomokekere, was scheduled for June 7, 2026, at Yidi Agodi Praying Ground in Ibadan. The group also thanked the government and security agencies for their rescue efforts and prayed for the safe return of all abductees.
