A Saudi doctor has been sentenced to life in prison after carrying out a deadly attack at a Christmas market in the eastern German city of Magdeburg. The incident happened just days before Christmas in 2024, when he drove a rented BMW into a crowd of people. On Friday, June 26, 2026, a German court sentenced him to life imprisonment.

The man was identified only as Taleb A., following German privacy laws. He is a psychiatrist from Saudi Arabia. German officials said he had a history of anti-Islamic statements and was believed to have sympathized with far-right extremist views.

Prosecutors said the attack lasted just one minute and four seconds but had been planned over several weeks. They charged him with the murders of six people and the attempted murder of hundreds of others who were at the busy Christmas market.

The victims included five women aged between 45 and 75, as well as a nine-year-old boy. Hundreds of other people were injured, making it one of Germany's deadliest recent attacks on a public gathering.

According to prosecutors, the defendant acted out of anger and frustration over the outcome of a civil legal dispute and because several criminal complaints he had filed were unsuccessful. Investigators said these personal grievances played a major role in motivating the attack.

The tragedy shocked Germany and reignited national debates about public safety and immigration. It also increased political tensions in the months leading up to the country's general election in February 2025, with leaders promising stronger security measures to prevent similar attacks in the future.
