Israel Demands Hezbollah Disarmament Before Lebanon Troop Withdrawal

Israel has said it will not remove its troops from southern Lebanon until Hezbollah is fully disarmed. Israeli officials insist that the armed group must no longer pose a threat before any military withdrawal can take place.

Government spokesman David Mencer explained that Israel's main responsibility is to protect its citizens, especially those living near the northern border. He said Israeli forces will remain in southern Lebanon until Hezbollah is completely demilitarized.

The statement comes as Israel and Lebanon continue talks in Washington with the help of the United States. Lebanese officials started direct negotiations with Israel in April under American mediation, and the latest round of discussions lasted three days.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said both countries are getting closer to reaching a "commitment of intent." This suggests that progress is being made, although no final agreement has been announced.

David Mencer also said Israel does not want any armed group operating close to its border. According to him, the Israeli army will only consider redeploying its troops after Hezbollah has been disarmed and southern Lebanon has been demilitarized.

Mencer added that a similar agreement was expected in 2024 but was not fully implemented. He claimed Hezbollah was supposed to disarm at that time but did not, which is why Israel believes stronger guarantees are needed before withdrawing its forces.
