The Bangladesh Election Commission announced on Friday that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a commanding victory in the general elections, winning 209 seats in the 300-member parliament. Its closest rival, a bloc led by Jamaat-e-Islami, captured 77 seats, marking a decisive outcome in the national vote.

The elections were held on Thursday and marked the first nationwide polls since the 2024 popular uprising that led to the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The vote was widely viewed as a crucial step in restoring political stability and democratic governance in the country.

International reactions quickly followed the announcement of results. Several countries, including Bangladesh's regional neighbours, congratulated BNP leader Tarique Rahman and praised the elections as a significant milestone for democracy. Observers described the process as a reflection of the people's will during a pivotal period in the nation's history.

Türkiye welcomed the peaceful conduct of both the parliamentary elections and the accompanying referendum. In a statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry expressed hope that the results would strengthen democracy, stability, and prosperity in Bangladesh. Ankara also reaffirmed its commitment to deepening bilateral relations across various sectors in the coming years.

China also reacted positively, commending what it described as "steady and smooth" elections. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated in Beijing that China supports Dhaka in advancing its domestic political agenda and remains ready to enhance its comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership with Bangladesh.

From Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Rahman on what he termed a "resounding victory." He also praised the Bangladeshi people for successfully conducting the elections and expressed optimism about strengthening historic and multifaceted bilateral ties between the two nations. Relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh have reportedly improved in recent months.

Meanwhile, India signaled continued support for its neighbour. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated in a post on X that New Delhi would back a "democratic, progressive and inclusive" Bangladesh. His remarks underscored India's interest in maintaining stable and constructive relations with the newly elected leadership.
