United States Iran Talks Resume Amid Rising Military Tensions

President Donald Trump has announced that the United States is currently engaged in negotiations with Iran, signaling a possible diplomatic opening despite recent military confrontations. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump confirmed that discussions are ongoing but declined to provide specific details about the nature or scope of the talks. His statement immediately drew attention given the heightened tensions between the two countries.

The president's remarks followed a serious security incident in the Arabian Sea, where a US fighter jet shot down an Iranian drone after it approached the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier. Trump referenced past military actions, suggesting that Iran may be motivated to negotiate in order to avoid a repeat of earlier US operations. He implied that diplomatic engagement could be a preferable alternative to further escalation.

On the Iranian side, officials have confirmed plans to resume talks with Washington, though with clear conditions. Iran reportedly decided to shift the proposed venue for negotiations from Istanbul to Oman, aiming to continue discussions in a location previously associated with talks over its nuclear program. Tehran has consistently emphasized that its nuclear activities are the sole subject it is willing to discuss.

A regional official noted that while the United States prefers a broader agenda, Iran remains firm in limiting negotiations strictly to nuclear-related issues. The official also revealed that Iran was aware of plans to include other regional countries during the early stages of organizing the Istanbul talks, a move Tehran appears reluctant to accept.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian publicly confirmed authorizing the talks, citing appeals from "friendly governments." He stressed that negotiations must take place in an environment free from threats and unreasonable demands, underscoring Iran's cautious but open stance toward dialogue.

Meanwhile, US officials say preparations are underway, with Special Envoy Steve Witkoff expected to engage Iranian representatives soon. Although earlier reports suggested a multilateral format, Iran is now pushing for direct talks, reinforcing its preference for focused, controlled negotiations as both sides test the path back to diplomacy.
