Speaking during the Angelus prayer on Sunday, Pope Leo XIV voiced deep concern over the rapidly unfolding events in the Middle East, particularly tensions involving Iran. He stressed the urgent need for calm as the situation threatens regional stability.

The Pope emphasized that genuine peace cannot be achieved through intimidation or military force. According to him, stability is never built on mutual threats or weapons that bring destruction, suffering, and death, but rather through sincere, responsible, and reasonable dialogue between nations.

Warning of grave consequences, he cautioned that the current escalation could lead to a tragedy of enormous proportions. He urged all sides to recognize the seriousness of the moment before the violence spirals beyond control.

In a heartfelt appeal, the Pontiff called on leaders and governments involved to accept their moral responsibility. He pleaded with them to halt the cycle of retaliation before it descends into an irreversible abyss that could devastate millions of lives.

The Pope also prayed for a renewed commitment to diplomacy. He expressed hope that diplomatic efforts would regain their rightful place in resolving disputes and that the well-being of ordinary people—who long for peaceful coexistence rooted in justice—would be prioritized.

Meanwhile, tensions intensified on Saturday when Israel and the United States launched coordinated airstrikes targeting Tehran and other cities across Iran. The attacks marked a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.

Iran subsequently retaliated with strikes against Israel and several Gulf nations hosting American military bases. Later, state media reported the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had ruled Iran for nearly 37 years, a development that could further reshape the region's political landscape.
