Authorities said the action was necessary to ensure transparency and accountability in the programme, which was created to provide meals for vulnerable residents during the holy month of Ramadan.
The Ramadan feeding initiative was introduced by Umar Namadi, the governor of Jigawa State, to support millions of residents struggling with food insecurity. The programme aims to provide meals for about 7.9 million beneficiaries through more than 640 free meal centres spread across the state during the 2026 Ramadan period.
However, only two weeks after the programme began, several complaints were reportedly received from members of the public about poor food quality and reduced food portions. A monitoring exercise and supervisory report later confirmed that some vendors were not following the agreed standards and were allegedly involved in misconduct.
Following the investigation, the Jigawa State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Special Duties took action by removing the vendors and companies linked to the irregularities. The decision was announced in Dutse by the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Special Duties, Auwalu Sankara.
According to Sankara, the affected contractors were dismissed for gross misconduct, poor handling of the programme, and mismanagement of public funds. He stressed that the government would not tolerate any act that could undermine the purpose of the Ramadan feeding programme, especially during such an important religious period.
The commissioner added that the government has already begun the process of replacing the dismissed vendors with more reliable contractors. He assured residents that the administration of Governor Namadi remains committed to protecting public funds and ensuring that the Ramadan feeding programme successfully supports the people who truly need help.
