The Russian ambassador to the United Kingdom, Andrey Kelin, said that Russia clearly supports Iran and rejects any suggestion that Moscow is staying neutral. His statement came during an interview where he explained Russia's position regarding the tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
Kelin said Russia has maintained a strong and friendly relationship with Iran for many years. Because of this relationship, he explained that Russia naturally has sympathy for Iran during the current crisis. However, he also clarified that Iran has not officially asked Russia for military assistance since the conflict escalated.
The comments were made during a program on Sky News hosted by Trevor Phillips. During the interview, Kelin clearly stated that Russia is supportive of Iran and strongly disapproves of the actions currently being taken against the country. He emphasized that Moscow views the situation negatively and is closely watching developments.
The ambassador also spoke about reports linking Russian technology to a recent drone attack on a British military base. According to reports, a drone launched from Lebanon struck the RAF Akrotiri, which is a major British airbase located in Cyprus. Investigators believe the drone carried a Russian-made Kometa-B navigation system.
The Kometa-B system had previously been identified in drones intercepted by Ukrainian air defense forces in late 2023. This discovery has raised concerns about how the technology may be spreading across different conflict zones. However, Russia has not officially confirmed direct involvement in supplying such equipment for the attack.
Despite the rising tensions, Kelin stressed that Iran has not requested help from Russia so far. He said the two countries remain close neighbors with a long history of cooperation. For now, Russia continues to express political support for Iran while monitoring the situation in the Middle East.
