This announcement has brought clarity after days of uncertainty about whether the cultural event would take place. The Durbar is one of the most important traditional celebrations in northern Nigeria.
The decision was approved by the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, following security reports. According to the government, there were concerns that some individuals might try to cause trouble during the Sallah celebration. Because of this, strong measures have been put in place to maintain peace and order.
In a statement released by Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the government said it is fully committed to protecting Kano's cultural traditions. However, it also made it clear that the safety of residents is the top priority. The government wants people to celebrate peacefully without fear.
The main Durbar event, known as Hawan Idi, will be led by Emir Sanusi along a fixed route. The procession will start from Kofar Mata Eid Ground and pass through approved areas before ending at the emir's palace. Some other Durbar activities will be limited, while a few have been temporarily suspended to reduce security risks.
Security agencies have been instructed to stay alert before, during, and after the celebration. Residents have also been advised to remain calm, follow the rules, and avoid spreading false information. The government believes that cooperation from the public will help ensure a smooth and successful Sallah celebration.
Despite the confirmation of the Durbar, there is still an ongoing dispute over the Kano emirship. While Governor Yusuf reinstated Sanusi II in 2024, Aminu Ado Bayero is challenging the decision in court. The government has assured the public that the issue will soon be resolved, and it wishes all Muslims a peaceful and joyful Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
