Researchers at Umm Al-Qura University in Makkah have created an innovative concrete barrier that generates electricity using air currents produced by moving vehicles.

The project was led by engineering expert Raed Shalwala and innovation director Fadi Almarghlani, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency.

This smart system captures airflow from traffic through a built-in design inside the concrete barriers, converting kinetic energy into usable electrical power.

The invention is expected to boost energy efficiency in road infrastructure while also improving traffic safety by combining multiple functions into one structure.

It is seen as a sustainable solution for modern infrastructure and smart city development, aligning with the university's mission to promote applied research and support sustainable growth under Saudi Vision 2030.
