The true meaning of Laa ilaaha illa Allah is that there is no deity truly worthy of worship except Allah alone. All praise belongs to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad ﷺ, his family, his Companions, the Tabi'un, and all who follow them rightly until the Day of Judgment.

The explanation of this great statement has been clarified by scholars, including Shaykh Ibn Baz and Shaykh 'Umar ibn Ahmad Al-Millibary, who discussed different interpretations of its meaning. These include:

1. There is no deity truly worthy of worship except Allah.

2. There is no deity truly worthy of obedience except Allah.

3. There is no god but Allah.

The correct and accepted meaning is the first: that only Allah deserves all forms of worship. This is strongly supported throughout the Qur'an.

Allah says: "You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help."
He also says: "Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him."
And: "I did not create jinn and mankind except to worship Me."
Also: "That is because Allah is the Truth, and what they call upon besides Him is falsehood."

These verses confirm that worship must be directed to Allah alone, without partners.

Even the polytheists of Makkah understood this meaning clearly. When the Prophet ﷺ called them to say "Laa ilaaha illa Allah", they rejected it out of pride, because they knew it required abandoning their idols and directing worship solely to Allah.

Allah mentions their reaction in Surah Sad and Surah As-Saffat, where they were shocked that all gods were being replaced by One God. This shows they understood the statement meant rejecting all false deities.

They did not reject the idea that Allah is the Creator or Lord. Rather, they believed their idols were intermediaries that could bring them closer to Allah. Allah refuted this belief, saying they worship things that neither benefit nor harm them, claiming they are only intercessors.

Allah also says they worshipped others only to bring them nearer to Him, but He declared this claim false and labeled such belief as disbelief.

Therefore, Laa ilaaha illa Allah means complete rejection of all false worship and exclusive devotion to Allah alone.

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and peace and blessings be upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his family, and all his followers until the Day of Judgment.
