The Iranian government questioned whether America is truly serious about diplomacy after fresh military clashes happened at sea. The situation has increased fears of a wider conflict in the region.
US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he expected Iran to respond to the peace proposal "supposedly tonight." However, no official response had been publicly announced by Tehran as of Saturday. The proposal was reportedly sent through Pakistani mediators to help extend the current truce and begin formal peace negotiations.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticized recent American military actions during a phone conversation with Türkiye's foreign minister. He said the actions of US forces in the Gulf, including alleged ceasefire violations, have created more doubts about America's intentions and commitment to peaceful diplomacy.
The latest tension increased after a US fighter jet reportedly attacked and disabled two Iranian-flagged oil tankers accused of challenging the American naval blockade around Iranian ports. An Iranian military official later claimed that Iran's navy responded with strikes against US forces and that the clashes eventually ended without further escalation.
The conflict has also affected the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil shipping routes. Iran has tried to maintain control over the area since the conflict started on February 28. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described it as "unacceptable" for Tehran to control the strait because of its importance to global oil supplies and international trade.
Meanwhile, satellite images reportedly showed an oil spill near Kharg Island, a major Iranian oil export terminal. Monitoring groups believe damaged oil infrastructure may have caused the leak. Earlier, President Trump had considered launching a major naval operation to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but later stepped back from the plan and chose renewed peace negotiations instead.
