The commission made the announcement in a statement released on June 1, confirming that flights from Makkah, Saudi Arabia, back to Nigeria will start on Wednesday.
This marks the final stage of the 2026 Hajj exercise for thousands of Nigerian Muslims who travelled to Saudi Arabia to perform the sacred pilgrimage. Every year, Hajj brings together millions of Muslims from different parts of the world, including Nigeria.
Before the commencement of return flights, NAHCON reported that it successfully transported 32,226 Nigerian pilgrims to Saudi Arabia through 79 outbound flights. The commission described the transportation process as a major achievement in the organisation of this year's pilgrimage.
According to NAHCON's Command and Control Centre in Abuja, the final outbound flight departed from Minna Airport in Niger State on May 17. The Flynas aircraft carried 382 pilgrims and 23 officials to Madinah. Among the pilgrims were 234 men and 148 women.
Despite the successful transportation of pilgrims, concerns were raised about the welfare of some Nigerians in Saudi Arabia. A viral video showed several pilgrims from Adamawa State sitting beside their luggage and claiming they had no accommodation arrangements after arriving in the country.
Some of the affected pilgrims said they waited for more than 24 hours before receiving assistance. Reports indicated that pilgrims from the Adamawa-Borno zone paid about ₦8.3 million each for the Hajj exercise. As return flights begin, attention will remain on ensuring that all Nigerian pilgrims return home safely while authorities continue to address welfare concerns raised during the pilgrimage.
