- Jun 30, 2026, 06:55 AMSuspected bandits attacked Illela Dawagware village in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State in the early hours of Sunday, June 28, 2026. The gunmen reportedly arrived on about nine motorcycles around 12:20 a.m. and operated in the community for about 30 minutes while firing gunshots, causing residents to flee for safety.
During the attack, the assailants reportedly killed the village imam, Mallam Liman Lawwali Na Ande, along with three other people. Residents said the attackers later moved from house to house and abducted 12 people, including eight women and four men. Among those kidnapped were Amiru, Hauwa, Awwalu, and nine other residents.
One resident said villagers tried to defend themselves but were outnumbered by the armed attackers. He also revealed that after killing Awwalu, the bandits abducted his wife and two of his brothers from the same house. Another resident, Alhaji Samaila, suffered a gunshot wound that fractured his hand and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Sokoto.
Residents accused security personnel of failing to respond despite repeated distress calls during the attack. According to them, they even offered to provide money for fuel so security operatives could reach the village, but no reinforcement arrived before the attackers left.
Community members said this was the 24th attack on the village. They recalled that about two years ago, bandits killed seven members of the same family inside a mosque. Ironically, some displaced residents had only returned to the village a week earlier after spending nearly two years away because of insecurity.
The latest attack has left many villagers living in fear. Residents said they now plan to spend their nights at the internally displaced persons (IDPs) camp in Goronyo instead of staying in the village. They appealed to the federal and Sokoto State governments, as well as security agencies, to take urgent action to stop the repeated attacks and protect their communities.
