Former U.S. President Donald Trump declared that two Muslim Democratic lawmakers, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, should be "institutionalized" and sent back to "where they came from" after a tense confrontation during his State of the Union address.

During the speech, both lawmakers openly criticized Trump as he defended his administration's strict immigration policies and enforcement measures. Tlaib, a Palestinian American, and Omar, a Somali American, were heard shouting "you're killing Americans," while Omar also referred to the president as a "liar."

In a follow-up post on Truth Social, Trump described the two congresswomen as having "the bulging, bloodshot eyes of crazy people, LUNATICS, mentally deranged and sick." He further suggested that they looked like they should be institutionalized and sent back "as fast as possible," despite both being American citizens.

The remarks quickly sparked backlash from Democratic leaders and civil rights organizations, who condemned the language as inflammatory and inappropriate. Critics argued that such statements deepen political divisions and promote harmful stereotypes.

Hakeem Jeffries described Trump's comments as "xenophobic" and "disgraceful," emphasizing that elected officials deserve respect regardless of political disagreements. Tlaib responded publicly, writing that the former president's statements showed "he is crashing out."

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) also condemned the remarks, labeling them racist and offensive. The organization stressed that criticism of government policy should never be met with attacks on a person's identity or heritage.

CAIR's National Deputy Director, Edward Ahmed Mitchell, stated that suggesting Muslim American lawmakers should be sent to countries connected to their ancestry is "racist and bigoted." He argued that such rhetoric undermines democratic values and unfairly targets individuals for exercising their right to political dissent.
