- Mar 06, 2026, 05:21 PMThe sister of abducted former Niger State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) chairman, Alhaji Alhassan Bawa Niworo, has revealed disturbing details about her brother's kidnapping. According to her, the kidnappers warned that they would kill him if she continued to plead with them using the name of Allah or Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The victim was reportedly abducted on Monday, September 29, 2025, around 4:00 pm while travelling on the Mokwa–New Bussa road in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State. Armed bandits attacked vehicles between the Felegi and Ibi communities and kidnapped several passengers, including Niworo.
Sources said the former SUBEB chairman was travelling to Minna with other passengers when the attackers blocked the road. Among those abducted was also a legal practitioner identified as Barrister Ahmad. After stopping the vehicles, the gunmen forced the victims into a nearby forest.
Some of the other victims were traders who had been returning from the New Bussa weekly market when the attack occurred. The incident caused panic among travellers who frequently use the busy road connecting different communities in the area.
Speaking in a video interview, Niworo's sister, Hajiya Kulu Niworo, explained that the family struggled greatly to meet the ransom demands of the kidnappers. She said they sold many of their belongings and even took bank loans to raise the money needed for negotiations.
According to her, the family first paid ₦30 million to the kidnappers. However, the criminals later demanded an additional ₦150 million. She also revealed that during phone conversations, the kidnappers became angry whenever she pleaded with them in the name of Allah or Prophet Muhammad, warning that such words could cost her brother his life.
