- Apr 19, 2026, 06:55 AMRIYADH: Saudi Arabia joined several Arab and Islamic nations on Saturday in strongly condemning Israel over its decision to appoint a diplomatic envoy to Somaliland, describing the move as a violation of Somalia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a joint statement, foreign ministers from Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Bangladesh, Algeria, Palestine, Turkey, Indonesia, alongside Saudi Arabia and Somalia, denounced the action in the strongest terms, calling it a "flagrant violation" of Somalia's unity.
The ministers reaffirmed their complete rejection of unilateral actions that threaten national unity or weaken sovereignty. They emphasized firm support for Somalia's territorial integrity and its recognized government as the legitimate representative of its people.
They further warned that such actions contradict international law, including principles of the United Nations Charter and the African Union framework, cautioning that it could create instability across the Horn of Africa and endanger regional peace.
Israel had earlier announced the appointment of Michael Lotem as a non-resident envoy to Somaliland — marking its first diplomatic move of this kind toward the region.
Somalia strongly rejected the decision, stating it violates international law and undermines its sovereignty. Authorities in Mogadishu reiterated that Somaliland remains an inseparable part of Somalia's internationally recognized territory and cannot be treated as an independent state.
