Jordan is a predominantly Muslim country, with approximately 97% of its population identifying as Sunni Muslims.

Article 2 of Jordan's Constitution recognises Islam as the state religion, while Islamic law plays a role in the country's legal system.
Christians constitute a religious minority, accounting for approximately 2.2% of Jordan's population.

The Christians reportedly targeted belonged to the Halasah family (آل هلسة), a prominent historic Jordanian Christian family with deep roots in Al-Karak. The family is well known for its contributions to Jordanian society, politics, history and education, with a strong reputation for academic excellence.

Among those reportedly killed in the attack were three medical doctors.
The incident has been described as the deadliest attack against Jordanian Christians since the 1950s.
