Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu allegedly altered his official account of security warnings received before the October 2023 Hamas attack, according to an investigation by Yedioth Ahronoth and its sister outlet Ynet.

The investigation compared a 55-page dossier released by Netanyahu in February with original government transcripts, meeting records and official testimonies. It reportedly found significant omissions and changes in wording concerning warnings issued by senior intelligence and security officials before the October 7 attack.

According to the investigation, Netanyahu's document presented him as consistently supporting targeted strikes against senior Hamas commanders, while portraying military and intelligence chiefs as reluctant to take military action and more interested in maintaining calm in Gaza.

However, the original records reportedly provide a different account. They indicate that Netanyahu repeatedly rejected or resisted proposed military initiatives, while maintaining that Hamas had been effectively deterred and that a broader confrontation could be avoided.

The investigation highlighted an April 2023 meeting in which then-Shin Bet director Ronen Bar and then-Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi reportedly recommended targeted strikes against senior Hamas figures in Gaza. Their proposals came months before the October 7 attack and amid growing security concerns.

The findings raise further questions about Netanyahu's handling of intelligence and security warnings before the attack, as well as his subsequent public account of the government's actions. The reported differences between the original records and Netanyahu's February dossier could intensify scrutiny of the prime minister's role and decision-making before the war.

The investigation adds to ongoing public debate in Israel over whether senior officials adequately responded to warnings about Hamas before October 7. It also underscores continuing demands for a full examination of the decisions, intelligence assessments and security failures that preceded the devastating attack.
