10 Facts About Eid-ul-Adha You Must Know

Assalaam Alaekum Wa Rrahmatullah Wa Barakatuh.

Here are important guidelines regarding Eid-ul-Adha sacrifice (Udhiyah):

1. Only camels, cows, sheep (rams), and goats are valid animals for sacrifice.


2. Required ages for eligibility:

Camel: 5 years

Cow: 2 years

Sheep: 6 months

Goat: 1 year



3. Participation in sacrifice:

Camel: up to 7 people

Cow: up to 7 people

Sheep: 1 person

Goat: 1 person



4. Animals with these defects are not valid:

Blindness or serious eye defect

Clear illness affecting health or activity

Obvious lameness

Extreme weakness or no marrow in bones



5. A woman may perform her own sacrifice, even during menstruation or postnatal bleeding.


6. It is allowed to take a loan for sacrifice if it is interest-free and repayment is intended.


7. One may appoint another person to carry out the slaughter.


8. Sacrifice begins after Eid prayer on 10th Dhul Hijjah and ends at sunset on 13th Dhul Hijjah.


9. Meat distribution is divided into three parts:

For personal consumption

For the poor and needy

For relatives and friends as gifts



10. It is Sunnah for those intending sacrifice to avoid cutting hair and nails once Dhul Hijjah begins.
