Israel Cabinet Approves West Bank Control Expansion Measures

Israel's cabinet on Sunday approved additional steps aimed at tightening its control over the occupied West Bank and making it easier for Israeli settlers to purchase land. Palestinian officials immediately condemned the decision, describing it as a "de-facto annexation" of territory they seek for a future independent staten.

The West Bank remains central to Palestinian aspirations for statehood. While parts of the territory are administered by the Western-backed Palestinian Authority (PA), much of the land is under Israeli military control. The area has long been a focal point of tension between both sides.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces elections later this year, has repeatedly argued that the creation of a Palestinian state would pose a security threat to Israel. His governing coalition includes several pro-settler parties that openly support annexing the West Bank, territory captured by Israel during the 1967 Middle East war and regarded by many Israelis as historically and biblically significant.

As part of the new measures, ministers approved the initiation of a formal land registration process in the West Bank for the first time since 1967. Officials say the move will clarify ownership claims and strengthen administrative control over the area.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a far-right member of the government, described the decision as a continuation of what he called a "settlement revolution," aimed at reinforcing Israel's presence throughout the territory. Defense Minister Israel Katz added that land registration is essential for maintaining security, enforcing the law, and ensuring freedom of action to protect Israeli citizens and national interests.

In its official statement, the cabinet argued that the policy serves as an appropriate response to what it called illegal land registration initiatives carried out by the Palestinian Authority. Israeli officials say the measure will reduce disputes and establish clearer legal frameworks for property ownership.

The Palestinian Authority presidency rejected the move, calling it an effective annexation of occupied Palestinian land and an escalation of settlement activity. While former U.S. President Donald Trump publicly ruled out formal annexation during his tenure, his administration did not significantly curb expanding settlements. In 2024, the International Court of Justice issued a non-binding advisory opinion stating that Israel's occupation and settlement activities in Palestinian territories are illegal and should end promptly—an assessment Israel disputes, citing longstanding historical and biblical connections to the land.
