Donald Trump said on Monday, April 6, that a proposed 45-day ceasefire in the ongoing conflict with Iran is a "significant step," while stressing that Iran must never be allowed to possess nuclear weapons. Speaking at the White House, he explained that discussions are still ongoing through intermediaries, but the proposal is not strong enough to fully resolve the crisis.

Trump noted that negotiations are continuing behind the scenes, but he believes stronger commitments are needed from Iran before any agreement can be finalized. He repeated that preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons remains a top priority for the United States and its allies, describing the ceasefire proposal as only a starting point toward peace.

Iran, however, officially rejected the ceasefire plan through the Islamic Republic News Agency and communicated its position through Pakistan. Iranian officials said they want a permanent end to the war instead of a temporary 45-day ceasefire, insisting that negotiations should not be based on threats or pressure.

According to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei, real negotiations cannot happen under ultimatums or military threats. Iran reportedly submitted a 10-point peace framework that includes regional de-escalation, safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, removal of sanctions, and support for post-war reconstruction.

The ceasefire proposal was introduced by mediators from Egypt, Pakistan, and Turkey, with US officials saying it is one of several options currently under discussion. Trump has not officially approved the plan yet, especially as military operations continue and diplomatic talks remain uncertain.

Despite ongoing negotiations, Trump warned that the United States could launch major strikes on Iran's infrastructure if no agreement is reached. He mentioned that key facilities such as power plants and bridges could be targeted, while also stating that preparations for a possible joint US-Israeli operation are in place, although the extended deadline is meant to give diplomacy a final chance to succeed.
