Global Leaders Praise Bangladesh Democratic Election Victory

The recent general elections in Bangladesh have drawn widespread international praise, with several nations describing the vote as a significant victory for democracy. Observers and leaders from across the region commended the peaceful conduct of the polls and congratulated the winning party.

According to the Bangladesh Election Commission, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured 209 seats in the 300-member parliament. Its closest rival, a bloc led by Jamaat-e-Islami, won 77 seats. The elections marked the first national vote since the 2024 uprising that removed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from office.

Many countries, including Bangladesh's neighbours, quickly reacted to the outcome. They congratulated BNP leader Tarique Rahman and described the elections as a triumph of democratic values and public participation.

Türkiye welcomed the smooth conduct of both the parliamentary elections and the referendum on reforms. In a statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry expressed hope that the results would strengthen democracy, stability, and prosperity in Bangladesh. Ankara also reaffirmed its commitment to deepening bilateral relations in multiple sectors.

China also praised the electoral process, describing it as steady and smooth. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that Beijing supports Dhaka in advancing its domestic political agenda. China further expressed readiness to enhance its comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership with Bangladesh.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Tarique Rahman on what he described as a resounding victory. He also praised the people of Bangladesh for successfully conducting the elections and expressed interest in strengthening historic and brotherly ties between the two nations.

India likewise responded positively, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi affirming continued support for a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh. His remarks signaled New Delhi's willingness to maintain cooperation and regional stability following the election outcome.
