The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on governors in Southwest Nigeria to urgently strengthen local security organizations such as Amotekun, the Oodua People's Congress (OPC), and other community-based security groups. According to the organization, these groups need more support, equipment, and funding to effectively combat rising insecurity in the region.

MURIC made this appeal through its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola. He expressed concern over the increasing cases of kidnapping, abduction, and violent crimes that have recently affected many communities across the Southwest. The organization believes immediate action is needed to prevent the situation from getting worse.

The call follows several security incidents reported in recent weeks. One of the most notable cases was the abduction of 39 students and seven teachers from communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. Such incidents have raised fears among residents and increased demands for stronger security measures.

Professor Akintola urged Southwest governors not to wait until criminal groups gain more control before taking decisive action. He emphasized the importance of empowering local security outfits that understand the terrain and can respond quickly to threats within their communities.

MURIC also recommended recruiting more personnel into the Amotekun Corps to improve its effectiveness. The organization advised state governments to prepare local vigilante groups as first responders during security emergencies. It specifically mentioned groups like OPC and Iru Ekun as important partners in the fight against banditry and kidnapping.

In addition, MURIC encouraged residents to remain courageous and united against criminal activities. The organization cited Qur'anic verses that encourage perseverance and determination when confronting threats. It also called on people of all faiths to work together in resisting criminal elements and restoring peace and safety across the Southwest region.
