A UK court has sentenced a man to 16 years in prison after he was found guilty of targeting and sexually abusing young Muslim men through fake social media accounts. The case has attracted widespread attention due to the scale of the offences and the number of victims involved.

The convicted man, Waleed Saeed, a British-born Muslim of Somali descent, was found guilty of several serious crimes, including rape, attempted rape, blackmail, and creating indecent images of children. Authorities said his criminal activities continued for several years before he was finally brought to justice.

According to investigators, Saeed created more than 100 fake profiles on platforms such as Snapchat, Instagram, and Grindr. He used these accounts to gain the trust of victims, many of whom privately identified as gay or bisexual and feared being exposed to their families or communities.

After obtaining intimate photos and personal information, he allegedly threatened to reveal the victims' private lives unless they paid money or agreed to meet him. Police said he used blackmail, deception, and intimidation to control and exploit those he targeted.

The investigation began after an 18-year-old victim reported a sexual assault to police. Further inquiries uncovered evidence linking Saeed to numerous victims across different parts of the United Kingdom, revealing a pattern of offending that reportedly dates back to 2018.

During sentencing, Judge Greene said the offender deliberately exploited the personal and cultural vulnerabilities of his victims through catfishing, blackmail, and sexual coercion. The Metropolitan Police believe there could be around 100 additional victims and have encouraged anyone affected to come forward, assuring them that their identities and privacy will be protected.
