Denmark Bans Islamic Call to Prayer Nationwide

The Danish government is considering a nationwide ban on the public broadcast of the Islamic call to prayer (Adhan). Officials say the proposal is part of efforts to reduce what they describe as the growing influence of Islam in public spaces across the country.

Immigration Minister Morten Bodskov confirmed that the government will examine whether such a ban would be allowed under Danish law. He said the government believes the Muslim call to prayer should not be heard publicly across Denmark and argued that it does not reflect the country's identity.

This is not the first time such a proposal has been made. It is the third attempt by a Danish immigration minister to create a legal basis for banning the public broadcast of the Adhan. Similar efforts were also made in 2020 and 2025.

The Adhan is the traditional Islamic call that invites Muslims to perform their daily prayers. It is usually broadcast five times each day from mosque loudspeakers. While some Danish municipalities already limit loudspeaker use through local noise rules, the government is now considering a nationwide restriction.

In Copenhagen, the Grand Mosque already has an agreement with local authorities not to broadcast the Adhan through outdoor loudspeakers. This means the call to prayer is not publicly amplified from the mosque.

Legal experts have warned that a nationwide ban could face constitutional challenges because Denmark's constitution protects the right to practice religion publicly. Any new law would likely have to balance religious freedom with concerns raised by residents living near mosques.
