Assalaam Alaekum Wa Rahmatullah Wa Barakatuh.
Ramadhaan 1447 / 2026 – Day 02.

One common question concerns reciting the Qur'an during Taraweeh prayers. It is permissible to recite from a physical Mushaf or from a phone during Taraweeh because it is a voluntary prayer. However, in obligatory prayers, reciting directly from a physical copy or phone is not permissible. The worshipper should recite from memory in the compulsory Salah.

Many people also ask whether there is a difference between Taraweeh and night prayer. In reality, Taraweeh is the night prayer performed during Ramadan. It is called Taraweeh because it is usually performed in congregation and short breaks are taken between sets of Rak'ahs. Outside Ramadan, it is simply referred to as Qiyam al-Layl (night prayer).

Regarding timing, Taraweeh does not have to be prayed immediately after 'Isha. It can be performed at any time between 'Isha and Fajr. If someone has work commitments or other responsibilities, they may pray later in the night. It is also permissible to pray it individually if one cannot attend congregation.

As for women leading prayer, it is not valid for a woman to lead men in Salah, even if she has memorized the entire Qur'an. If she were to lead men, the prayer would not be valid. In congregational settings, men and boys stand in the front rows, while women and girls stand behind them.

Shorter Surahs may be recited in Taraweeh, and there is no obligation to recite long portions. After completing Taraweeh and Witr, it is also permissible to pray additional voluntary prayers later in the night. The door of voluntary worship remains open until Fajr.

Reciting the Qur'an without fully applying Tajweed rules is permissible, but reciting with proper Tajweed is better and more rewarding. Care must be taken to avoid major pronunciation mistakes. Completing the Qur'an by reading from a phone is valid, just as reciting from memory or a physical Mushaf is valid.

The reward of recitation comes from moving the tongue and lips. Simply looking at the Qur'an or reading silently in the heart does not count as recitation. One does not need to raise the voice; even a low voice is sufficient as long as the tongue and lips move. With Allah's permission, every letter recited carries ten rewards. The essence of recitation lies in sincerity, reflection, and reverence.

Ramadan Kareem. Ramadan Mubarak.
