The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that medical supplies in Gaza are running dangerously low, even after Israel reopened a key border crossing this week. Hospitals are struggling to keep up with the demand for essential items.

Some critical supplies, like gauze and needles, have already run out. WHO's regional director, Hanan Balkhy, shared this update on Friday, citing reports from Gaza's Health Ministry, which continues to face the effects of Israel's ongoing war in the region.

"Stocks of essential medicines, trauma supplies, and surgical tools are critically low," Balkhy said. She also highlighted that fuel shortages are making it even harder for hospitals to operate properly.

"The situation is very serious," she added. "We are quickly running out of whatever is left, and urgent action is needed to prevent further health crises."

Earlier this week, the Israeli military reopened the Karem Abu Salem border crossing "for the gradual entry of humanitarian aid." The crossing had been closed due to missile threats from Iran, after an escalation of air attacks involving Israeli and US forces.

Meanwhile, the Rafah crossing into Egypt, which serves as the main exit point for most people in Gaza, remains closed. As a result, medical evacuations are still suspended, leaving many patients without the care they desperately need.
